Canning Jar Lids
For canning food in jars, the canning jar lids have an important role in the quality of the food and the time it remains fresh. A good jar lid keeps the jar air tight, not allowing air or other particles to pass through. There are more than 30 brands of canning jar lids that use different methods of sealing such as wax sealing jar lids, glass lids and stainless steel lids are the different types of lids used for different jars.
Which canning jar lids to use?
Always choose your canning jar lid carefully as it is the main reason why your food will remain fresh and preserve all the nutrition. A canning jar lid that is reusable is financially important. Canning jar lids should be able to be used with pressure canners or water bath, should be corrosion free from acidic food, and specially dish washer safe. There are two options
Tattler reusable lids: they are made of reusable plastic with regular metallic rings.
Bulk canning lids: they are standard disposable lids sized for regular or wide mouth.
Fabric canning jar lids
If you want to gift your home made canned food to your neighbors, friends, relatives or others who have not been very lucky in producing at their own farm or garden then you can sew your home made fabric jar lids with colorful clothing to decorate your jar with delicious food. To make your own fabric canning jar lid you will need
1. Fabric Scraps – 7" circles for wide mouth jars, 6" circles for regular mouth jars
2. 1/4" wide elastic scraps 6-8" long
3. Thread
4. Optional- ribbon and narrow lace or edging trim.
Now you are ready to make your lid
1. Determine your jar size.
2. Trace the circles on to the fabric and cut the circles.
3. Cut in zigzags or any other shape you like.
4. Match the elastic and fabric fold lines, attaching the elastic 2" in from the
original edge of the fabric. Use a zigzag stitch to attach the elastic, gently
stretching the elastic as you sew it.
5. Place your hand made lid on the jar top and tie a ribbon around the jar.
6. Your home made jar lid is ready to be presented.

Why you fail to seal canning jar lids
You may fail to seal your jar correctly if you do not follow the instructions carefully. To seal a jar you have to make sure
1. The lid does not have any cracks
2. No bubbles are left inside the jar
3. Not screwed correctly
4. Reuse of old lids again and again.
5. Faulty or insufficient processing
6. Unclean rim of jar
