How Plumbing Has Evolved From Roman Baths To Franke Sinks

While plumbing has existed since the ancient civilisations of the Romans and the Greeks, it did not become prevalent until the vast progression of cities in the 19th Century. Since then though plumbing has come on leaps and bounds in respect of the way in which waste is managed and homes gain access to clean flowing water, so much in fact we often give little thought to the actual mechanisms of the plumbing, we focus on style and appearance. Plumbing first made an appearance at the introduction of public baths. In ancient civilisations bathing was considered a social activity and it was only the more affluent end of society who had use of private baths. The wealthy end of society could afford to purchase spring water though the majority were left with no other option than to source water to drink from the heavily contaminated river Thames. Along with human waste, the Thames was contaminated with other unimaginable horrors for example the chemicals used in manufacturing and rotting carcasses.

The state of London's water triggered a vast surge in the consumption of Gin. Gin was affordable for most and most importantly not contaminated, it would lead to a level of intoxication that would block out the reality of residing in London in the 18th Century. This was a downward spiral into worse poverty as many had damaged their ability to undertake a days work.

Luckily proper plumbing systems became a widespread feature and things have evolved substantially since that time. We now are able to fit out our kitchens and bathrooms with stylish Franke sinks and taps, and so are blessed with countless other labour saving gadgets.

Through the course of the 19th Century indoor plumbing became more and more common, and although this resulted in vast improvements in the health and hygiene of the country, housework was still a tasking job. It was right at the end of the 19th century that suitable plumbing was a feature within homes, which meant housework was no longer such a laborious task.

Plumbing is one thing we take for granted in the UK and it is difficult to visualize what life was like before it, although many people around the world have to make do without it. As a developed nation with instant access to clean, safe water along with the convenience of waste disposal that our homes are equipped with, we should make the most of these luxuries and be sure our sinks and taps are top quality, like those manufactured by Franke sinks and taps.
