Popular 1940s Cedar "Waterfall" style hope chest?
Hi,
I have a waterfall style cedar hope chest, that were so popular in the 1940s. I inherited from my grandmother.
Can I safely store extra linens and wool items in the chest, or will contact with the cedar wood harm them? Also, is it safe to store items such as letters and photos, or will the cedar harm those? What types of items were intended for this piece.
Also, there is a small shelf that is detached, it is almost the width of the chest, but I can't tell where it was supposed to go or how it was originally attached. If anyone has an idea or link to a picture of the interior of one of these types of chests, I would appreciate it.
I would have asked my grandmother, but I inherited the piece after she passed away.

I agree with Helen above, the little shelf either rides in the lid or slides in on a little rim at the top of the chest. As for storage, everyone above is correct except I would wrap items in acid free tissue, I always include a little packett of dessicant to absorb moisture and humidity and I do keep letters and paper goods in acid free tissue, not plastic. What a wonderful memory of your granny for you to treasure!
