Fly Control - An Important Domestic Task

Flies can be annoying and potentially dangerous pests. As well as causing discomfort through their bites, they can carry a range of diseases and bacteria, including salmonella, dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera and parasitic worms. Fly control is vital to prevent the spread of infections and illness.

The first step is to not attract too many flies, and deny them sites for laying their eggs. Flies spread disease by landing on food, so simply covering it can make a big difference. Storing everything in sealed containers and plastic bags - and not leaving any food lying around - will also help. Wash all dishes immediately after use, and be diligent about wiping up any spillages too.

Flies breed in rubbish or standing water so, where possible, take the rubbish out regularly and keep the bins sealed. To avoid water pooling, keep gutters and drains clear, and don't leave standing water in sinks or washing-up bowls. If you have a pond, goldfish can help, as they will eat fly larvae.

You can also practise good fly control by cleaning up after pets. Faeces are the perfect breeding ground for fly larvae, so must be dealt with promptly to avoid the chance of flies landing on it and laying eggs, or spreading contamination to our food by landing on it next. Finally, using fly screens and keeping doors and windows closed will act as an effective barrier.

On top of these preventative measures, you can take action to eliminate flies. This could be as simple as keeping a fly swatter in the house. These are lightweight, usually made of plastic, and consisting of a long handle with a wide, flat rectangular head at the end. They must be light to enable the user to move quickly, overcoming a fly's fast reactions.

Fly bottles are another effective method of fly control. There are different varieties, but all follow the same basic principle. Flies are attracted into the bottle by bait, either meat or a sweet liquid. Once inside, the construction of the bottle prevents them from escaping and they will eventually starve, or fall into the sweet liquid and drown.

Because it's light and can be placed anywhere, fly paper is a cheap and effective method of fly control. Perhaps the best known method of dealing with these flying pests is to use fly paper. This consists of a long strip of adhesive, which is pinned to the ceiling. Once flies land on the strip, they are unable to escape and will eventually starve.

It's also possible to buy electrical fly killers, which electrocute any insects coming into contact with their grid, or to use any number of chemical pesticides to spray the flies. None of these methods will be effective against a significant fly problem, though.

In these cases it might be necessary to contact a professional exterminator. They will have the relevant skills, experience and equipment to rid a home of the insects without causing harm to people or pets.

Although flies are a nuisance and can seem persistent, a few simple fly-control techniques will make a big difference, and contribute to a healthier, happier home.
