Why Should You Choose Stainless Steel For Your Undermount Sink?
Stainless steel sinks have been accepted widely as the sink of choice for kitchen remodels. For years the cast iron sink was the number one sink found in homes. The weight, the cost and the inability to repair the porcelain chips in these sinks has made them less favorable. Other products have come on the market and some are simply a better choice.
Stainless steel is probably the number one choice for sinks today. Available in both drop in and undermount configurations, these sinks are beautiful, durable and functional. They are available in so many different shapes and sizes they can be made to fit almost any application, either indoors or out.
The cost of a good quality stainless steel kitchen sink is within the reach of most people considering a kitchen remodel or simply replacing their countertops. The plumbing company showrooms are generally the most expensive place to buy these sinks, with the stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot coming in second. There are good companies on line who offer first class undermount sinks at very reasonable prices. You don’t want to compromise on quality when you are making the investment to do major work in your kitchen. Plan ahead and look for a company with a good reputation, fast shipping and a good warranty and return policy.
Some of the things to consider when buying a stainless steel sink are gauge (thickness) of the metal and sound dampening qualities. The gauge of stainless steel sinks generally run from 16 to 23 gauge. The lower the number the thicker the metal will be. Generally the 18 gauge sink is fine. Keep in mind the thicker the metal the more expensive the sink and it will not wear any better or last longer. You are looking for the most quality at the most reasonable price. The sink should also have sound dampening pads on the bottom of the sink. Don’t look for real thick pads. They will be a 32nd to a 16th of an inch, but these are fine. The sink should also be sprayed with an undercoating on the bottom to prevent condensation from forming on the bottom in humid climates and dripping underneath the cabinets.
The finish on the sink should be a brushed finish. The highly polished sinks are beautiful when first installed, but do not wear well. They show nicks and scratches the brushed finish will hide. There is also a large selection of matching faucets and accessories for this finish as well.
Stainless steel sinks, either the standard style or the zero radius commercial style, are the most practical, affordable, easy to care for and generally accepted sink in the market today. They also look great with the wide variety of stainless appliances available. It is a choice you will not regret making.
