Indoor Allergies – Microscopic Villains Wreak Havoc for Some

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, we spend more than 90% of our time indoors.  Studies have also found that indoor air quality can be up to two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.  It seems that our houses and apartment buildings are a harbor for allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, molds and even just plain dust, all which can worsen the symptoms of those with allergies and all which can be found in even the cleanest homes.  Not surprisingly, indoor allergies are a significant issue to many of us in the Portland area.

There are some methods to reduce indoor allergens, and, thus, indoor allergy symptoms.  Devoted pet owners with persistent indoor allergies are counseled to invest in a HEPA air filter or to seek medical attention for allergy shots.  Dust mites can be minimized with regular and through cleaning of bedding and upholstery.  Mold can be avoided by making sure that damp areas such as basements, bathrooms and kitchens are properly ventilated.  In the event that mold develops, through cleaning with bleach is necessary to kill the mold spores.  Some dust is present in every home, regardless of how often or how thoroughly the house is cleaned.
