How to Install Granite Counters by Yourself
Granite counter tops are extremely popular for use in new construction particularly for kitchen countertops and bathroom countertops. Granite is no doubt a durable natural stone and has tremendous visual appeal and much sought-after by housewives for kitchen and bathroom improvement. If you possess some basic carpentry skills and have the required tools, it is not difficult to install granite countertops yourself. Some of the tools and materials you might need are as follows: a four foot level, pencil, tape measure, caulking gun, wooden shims, silicone caulking, latex caulking, liquid nail, a bucket, some rags, and some saw horses.
Before commencing installation of kitchen or bathroom countertops, the first step is to study your countertop finishing options and choose the most apt one as per your needs and preference. There are various kinds of edges for your countertop to choose from - bullnose edge, polished square edge, wood trim etc.
After you decide on your preferred kind of edge for the countertop, you will have to neatly remove the already existing countertop. You will also remove any sinks and faucets and disconnect other appliances, if any. Now loosen the screw that holds the counter top in place and lift it off. Take care not to harm your expensive granite tile and ensure the aesthetic value of the countertop is not impaired
The next obvious step for installation is taking measurements. However, it is best to utilize professional service so that you do not end up wasting money and spoiling your granite piece in any manner.
It is advisable that you allow a professional installer from a reliable company to install your granite counter tops. They have all the proper tools and knowledge to do the job right. Although it is not impossible for a homeowner to do the job, your skills will need to be more than that of a professional worker.
As you may be aware, granite is very heavy and depending on the size you need, it is most likely you will need a couple of extra people at the very least to help carry and place the tops. Granite is also very expensive and if dropped or mishandled will break. A single small error in template measurement could render the tops useless. If you have made all the correct measurements and are ready to install, follow the installation instructions as below:
• Remove your old countertops
• If the installation is in a kitchen, then you will need to disconnect the water supply lines to the faucet as well as the drain.
• Remove Philips or Robertson head screws or you can also snap them off with a flat or pry bar
• Lift the tops off of the cabinets and if the tops are too big to be carried out in one piece, you will need to cut them in to pieces for easy handling.
• Vacuum the inside of the cabinets.
• Take a four foot level and check the cabinets for level noting
• Hold the granite top in the flat position or from the edge in a vertical position. Using liquid nail, run a small bead of adhesive on the edge of the cabinets where it will contact the top
• Using a tape measure check you have the same distance on the front edge off of the face of the cabinets
• After the top is positioned evenly across the front, check for level. Using a four foot level, check the top from front to back, and side to side making adjustments by placing shims underneath the top
• Run a nice bead of adhesive on the backs of the splashes and place against the wall in their proper locations.
• Allow about an hour for the adhesive to settle, then caulk in the tops using a silicone and/or latex. Caulk the seams between the splash or splashes and the granite with clear silicone. Caulk the seams between any painted walls with latex.
• This would conclude the installation of the granite top. If you removed a sink, you can now reinstall it.
