Learn What Double Glazing Actually Is

We have all heard of it and many of us have it fitted in our homes but what exactly is double glazing? As the name suggests double glazing uses two sheets of glass. The two sheets of glass are fitted into a frame and a gap is left between the two panes and silica balls are used to keep the two panes of glass separated and to absorb moisture from the air between to the glass to prevent condensation. The unit is then sealed.

There are two types of glass which are usually used for making double glazing units. Either toughened sometimes referred to as tempered glass or float glass. Float glass is used to create smaller double glazed units, these are ideal for higher up in buildings where there is less chance of them being broke. Whereas Toughened glass or tempered glass as the name suggests is a safety glass which if broken is designed to shatter in to thousands of smaller pieces which are far less harmful when broken. It is actually a requirement of the Glass and glazing federation that tempered glass is used when creating large glazed units such as patio doors or floor to ceiling conservatory windows.

So why is double glazing preferable over other options? Firstly as mentioned previously there is the safety aspect double glazing is much harder to be break and if broken it will shatter into smaller less dangerous pieces. This is particularly beneficial for areas where children may be such as schools or family homes. However there is also another major advantage is that it has much greater insulating qualities than single glazing.  The two layers of glass help to prevent much more heat from escaping than traditional single pane glass windows. This therefore has the added benefit of helping to save you money on your monthly gas and electricity bills. Not only will you be saving money but as you are using less energy you will also helping to do your bit to save the environment. The two layers of glass also help to reduce the amount of noise which is let into your home.
