How can I copper plate something?

I have a battery cover for my phone, which I think is stainless steal. To absorb heat a little better, and to look nice, I want to copper plate it. I hear electroplating is an easy method, and since my Dad is a chemist, he has acess to all sorts of equipment.

How would I, from start to finish, plate this piece with a nice layer of copper? I need details. I can get whatever copper, batteries, chemicals and etc. I need from his lab.

you are not going to be able to copper plate stainless steel.
