Thera [Santorini] Volcanic Activity
Thera is on a plate boundary,which has been intermittently active since ca 400Ka. Recent research located an extensive field of hydrothermal vents 5km from Thera at the submarine Kolumbo volcanic crater near the plate convergence.In addition to gas and fluid,vents can emit metals [eg: silver].Chimneys of these metals on the crater floor are 3m tall and <1m wide.The strength of an eruption depends on its duration and volcanic deposits can result from multiple flows [J de Beer,2006].A prominent rhyolitic tephra,Y2,with an extensive eastern dispersion is linked to the Cape Riva eruption on Thera ca 20000 BCE,cal.The tephra layer,PhTi,which was emplaced in the Philippi peat basin of Greece ca111060 BCE,cal,has a chemical composition and contains shards,that have affinities to the Cape Riva and Minoan Age eruptions at Thera [Y Hamann,2010].A major volcanic event such as Thera can occur in several phases.During stage 1 the velocity and height of the eruption usually attains its maximum,with the primary emission generally being pumice.Subsequently there could be phraeto-magnetic and igimbrite emplacement phases.Tephra layers may alter more distal to the vent due to progressive loss of crystalline fraction.Thera pumice contains relatively small crystallites [Saminger,2000].
There was a massive volcanic eruption at Thera ca 100 KA ago,which distributed ash over the entire central/eastern Mediterranean region [E Zansgger,2001].He speculated that the Thera caldera collapsed prior to the Minoan Age eruption,because there was pumice from an eruption on the steep side of the caldera,which could infer that the cone collapsed pre-depostion of the pumice and geologists found blue-green algae in the caldera,that lived below the sea pre-8000 BCE [ibid].
Not all of the Bronze Age pumice in the Aegean region came from Thera.The Milos volcano in the Cyclades and the Nisyroe and Yali volcanoes on the Dodecanese were also active during the Minoan era and they have distinctive pumice signatures.A rhyodactic, biotite bearing pumice at Ayia Irini,Cyprus,has not been sourced.The same applies to a large block of biotite bearing,Middle Minoan [?] pumice at Gournia on Crete and at Tel Haratz.At Paros,Limnos,Anaphi,Maltia,and Zakros unidentified pumices coexist with Bronze Age Thera pumice [Bakler,1985].Unsourced Bronze Age pumice is more widespread than Thera pumice.Whether the biotite bearing pumice was emitted from a single point of origin is a moot point [The Thera Foundation,nd]."If" it did,there might be totally collapsed volcano,which is submerged beneath the sea [speculation].Descriptions of natural phenomena in Egyptian texts do not necessarily relate to the Minoan Age Thera eruption.Cappadocia and Konya are major volcanic centres in Anatolia and the Harrat Ash Shaam volcanic field extends from southern Syria to Saudi Arabia [Y Hamannn,2010].Vesuvius erupted ca 1600 BCE and destroyed several villages.The GISP acid peak for 1623 BCE has a chemical analysis signature,which correlates with the Aniakahak volcanic eruption on the Aleutian Islands offshore from Alaska/Siberia and not from the Thera eruption [Geological Journal,2008].Chinese documents record the aftermath of a "volcanic eruption" [?] ca 1618 BCE.From 1628-1626 BCE tree ring growths in Ireland and the southwest USA are low [M Bailles,1998].There is no diagnostic evidence that any of the above are associated with the chronology at Thera.
The date magnitude and direct consequences of the Minoan Age Thera volcanic eruption are difficult to resolve The average radio carbon age fro organic remains on Thera is ca 1630 BCE.However radio carbon estimates proximal to the source of volcanic activity may not always be accurate,because carbon dioxide can seep into plant life prior to an eruption and deceptively age the organic matter.A calibration plateau ca 1700-1500 bp can also adversely impact on age estimates.An olive branch with leafs and twigs was found 1-3cm above the pumice base on Thera.X-ray tomography identified 72 irregular,"barely visible" rings on a branch with preserved bark.The outer most rings are deemed to date to 1621-1605 BCE [48% confidence] and 1627-1600 BCE [95% confidence;W Friedrich,2006] "If" the latter estimate is reasonably reliable,collation of the above could infer that Thera erupted sometime during the decades immediately prior to 16000BCE.
This chronology is not in agreement with the archaeological evidence.Late Minoan white slip pottery shards [1540-1480 BCE] were retrieved at Thera [Bistok,1996].G Bergoffan [2006] suggested that 1A white slip pottery might have reached Thera at an earlier date.M Bietok contends that Thera pumice at the Egyptian temple by Tell el Dada' on the Nile Delta dates to the 18th dynasty [post 1560? BCE]Pumice can be imported or recycled,it does not provide a definitive time for the Thera eruption.
There is no volcanic ash from Thera west of Malos Island,which is ca 90 km from Santorini.Westerly squalls apparently transported the airborne emissions eastward.There is a 30cm layer of Thera tephra on Kos Island ca 190km east of Santorini.Deep sea core 172-25,which is about the same distance east,encountered 26cm of Thera pumice and there are several layers in excess of 60cm on Rhodes [Watkins,nd].Coastal Turkey has thicker deposits of Thera pumice than eastern Crete [<5cm]There are indications of tsunami activity at Palaikastro,a major eastern Crete seaport [S MacGillvary.nd],but there is no evidence that it was generated by the Thera eruption,which does not appear to have had a direct,devastating impact on Minoan residents.
The inhabitants of Thera seem to have had ample warning of the impending disaster,because only the skeleton of one old man was recovered at the site [E Zangger,2001].There are some indications that a reconstruction phase was in progress at Thera,before the community was covered in pumice [W Friedrich,2006],which could imply more than one natural disaster.
The deep sea core SL60 was extracted NE of Crete.Tephra was present between 20 and 57cm,well above the S1 sapropel at 75-105cm.The tephra section is separated into two distinct layers at a core depth of 28cm.The lower level was confidently sourced to the Minoan Age Thera eruption.Although some elements of the upper layer indicate a similar source,but other elements concur with the background sediments.Hence the result is not definitive [C Slomp,2004].
Golhisar Goluis is a shallow lake in the Lycian Taurs Mountains of SW Turkey ca 400km east of Thera A tephra deposit was recorded at a depth of 245-275cm in the lacustrine core GHE 93-6.The peat directly below the tephra dates to ca 1628 BCE +/- 75a,cal [Eastwood,1999].Chemical analysis of the glass shards sourced the tephra to Thera [Golhisar,1999].At ca 252cm there is a distinct decrease in shard concentration,which broadly correlates with the SL60 core depth of 28cm.Between 251 and 252cm there is a slightly elevated diatom concentration,that could represent a bioavailable nutrient influx into the lake [Eastwood,1999].Although there is no diagnostic evidence of two or more volcanic eruptions in the Thera region between 1630 and 1480 BCE,the above might provide incentive for further investigation.
