Natural light
Natural light is always desirable. Besides being more energy-efficient than a room that relies totally on artificial light, a room well lit by natural light provides a psychological boost, and a good bathroom design will include appropriate windows and/or skylights. Of course, in new construction, window placement is often dependent on the other windows of the exterior elevation, so that there may not be a lot of flexibility there. And in a remodel, oftentimes the window locations are predetermined. To compound the difficulties, bathrooms are usually fairly small rooms with a lot of big fixtures to fit in, so finding an appropriate spot for a window can be a challenge. But there are some window options that address the special needs of the bathroom.
Privacy is one of the big issues, and a bathroom with a lot of glass in a highly visible location might feel too exposed. To avoid this, plan (if possible) for window placements that are relatively high on the wall—arched-top windows are good in this situation—or that readily accommodate treatments like blinds. Frosted or etched glass treatments might be appropriate in this situation, as might one of the new electrically controlled glass frostings that can transform clear glass into translucent glass. Some windows have integral blinds between the inner and outer glass, a good choice for reduced maintenance.
I have to admit a certain ambivalence about roof windows, or skylights. On one hand, they can introduce five times the light of a regular window with the same size opening, and they can do this while not compromising privacy. Also, any chance of breaking up the flat plane of a ceiling is a good idea, and light shafts that connect the ceiling to th^e roof are dramatic. Skylights can admit natural light to a bathroom without an outside wall, and an operable skylight is a great natural ventilator, especially in warm weather. On the other hand, skylights are prone to condensation, particularly in the high-moisture environment of the bathroom. Even the most energy-efficient ones contribute significantly to heat loss, and the area under a skylight can feel drafty because of convection currents created by the close proximity of cool and warm air.
If you do install a skylight, be aware that skylights in different roof locations will produce different types of light. North-facing exposures will always generate a soft, diffuse light. East-facing exposures introduce plenty of morning light, great for waking up to. South- and west-facing exposures have the potential of introducing too much light (and heat gain) into a bathroom. Make provisions for shades and appropriate glass coatings to reduce unwanted heat gain in this type of installation. The shape of the shaft will also influence how much light is admitted by a skylight. While straight shafts are the easiest to frame, insulate, and finish, I prefer flared shafts because they introduce more light and are more interesting architecturally.
As an alternative to a traditional skylight, consider installing a tubular skylight. These skylights are essentially highly reflective shafts with a clear plastic dome that admits natural light on the top and a diffuser lens on the base. They look and install a bit like a metalbestos chimney and range in size from 8 in. to 21 in. in diameter. While they don't ventilate like an operable skylight, they do have an R-22 insulation rating and admit a glare-free natural light. Tubular skylights are a particularly good choice in a bathroom with no exterior walls and a long distance between the bathroom ceiling and the roof because the light shaft can range from 10 ft. (for the 8-in.-diameter model) to 30 ft. (for the 21-in.-diameter model) in length. The diffuser lens looks like a contemporary light fixture and is less intrusive than a regular roof-window shaft.
Glass block is another alternative to traditional fenestration and can let in plenty of light while maintaining privacy. Installations can be as simple as a conventional window opening that has been retrofitted with glass block or as elaborate as an extensive glass-block shower surround with one wall on the exterior that lets in light. Glass block is versatile, but it isn't particularly energy efficient, with an R-value of about 1.8 (less than a good insulating-glass window), so it should be used sparingly on exterior walls in cold climates.
